Established more than 30 years ago, Louis Thiers has manufactured and sold thousands of knives and cutlery pieces internationally. This experience has shaped a practical understanding of the materials, construction and design details that make cutlery comfortable to use and dependable over time.
Inspired by the traditions of French dining, Louis Thiers combines classic Laguiole character with purposeful design, carefully selected materials and comfortable balance. Every collection is created to provide lasting quality and excellent value for money.

Inspired by the French Laguiole Tradition
The Laguiole knife takes its name from the village of Laguiole—pronounced “Lay-ole”—on the Aubrac plateau in the Aveyron region of southern France.
In 1829, local cutler Pierre-Jean Calmels is widely credited with developing the folding knife that became the foundation of the familiar Laguiole design. Originally created as a practical knife for the farmers and shepherds of the Aubrac region, it evolved over time to include a slender blade, curved handle and decorative metalwork.
An awl was added to some Laguiole knives around 1840 for use by cattle farmers. The corkscrew appeared later in the nineteenth century as people from the Aubrac region moved to Paris and found work in cafés and restaurants.
Laguiole cutlery also has a strong historical connection with Thiers, the celebrated cutlery-making town in France’s Auvergne region. As demand increased, Thiers became an important centre for the production of Laguiole knives and table cutlery. Laguiole and Thiers remain the two French towns most closely associated with this distinctive style.
Today, Laguiole describes a recognised form of knife and cutlery rather than one individual brand. Louis Thiers creates its own interpretation of this French tradition for contemporary kitchens and dining tables.
Purposeful Design and Quality Materials
Louis Thiers quality begins with materials and construction.
Depending on the collection and its intended use, Louis Thiers products may feature carefully polished stainless steel, secure full-tang blades, forged Damascus steel, natural hardwoods or durable contemporary handle materials.
Selected knives use a hard VG10 cutting core protected by multiple layers of Damascus stainless steel. Selected table-cutlery collections combine a deep mirror polish, comfortable balance and resistance to bending during normal use for lasting reliability.
Natural materials are selected for their individual grain, colour and character. Contemporary materials are chosen for durability, consistency and ease of care. Secure rivets, comfortable handle profiles and carefully finished details complete each design.
Specifications vary between collections because every product is designed for a particular purpose. The relevant materials, dimensions and construction should therefore be clearly identified on each product page.
Quality in the Details
The distinctive bee and curved handle make Laguiole cutlery immediately recognisable, but appearance alone does not determine quality.
Louis Thiers focuses on the details that affect the experience of owning and using cutlery: the grade and thickness of the steel, the stability of the handle, the strength of the construction, the balance of each piece and the quality of its finish.
Products are assessed for construction, finish and food-contact safety. Selected collections are hand finished, and Louis Thiers products carry a 24-month warranty against manufacturing faults.
This attention to practical detail produces refined cutlery that feels comfortable and agile in the hand while remaining dependable for regular use.
Quality and Value
Louis Thiers was created to offer high-quality Laguiole cutlery without unnecessary cost.
Rather than relying on decoration or heritage claims alone, the brand places value in the product itself: carefully chosen materials, purposeful specifications, solid construction and enduring design.
This balance of quality, function and price allows Louis Thiers to offer cutlery that looks elegant, performs reliably and represents excellent value for money.
